I had so darn many compliments on this frosting. I put it on one of Grandma Leu’s angel food cakes, and served it at a tennis party. Everyone at our table loved it, except the jerk sitting next to me who had just asked to join our Sunday Mixed Doubles tennis group. He threw his in the trash . . . and I threw his request in there with it.
1/3 cup cornstarch
1/3 cup sugar
2 cup milk
1 egg yolk
2 tsp vanilla
1/2 lb butter
1 cup powdered sugar
Mix the cornstarch and sugar. Add milk and egg yolk. Cook until thick, stirring constantly. Add vanilla. Cool and then refrigerate until cold.
Cream the butter and powdered sugar. Add cold custard. Beat 20 minutes.
